When the parents roll out, the party rolls in!

I never threw a party at my parent's house during high school. I was always scared that I'd get caught or that people would break my parent's valuable relics. SO... when my mom & dad told me they were leaving town & asked me to watch their house this weekend, I knew that I had to make up for lost time... PARTAY!

Being the "rebel" that I am, I cleared the party with Mom beforehand, (I knew she'd say yes and I figured it was a respectful and responsible gesture, since I'm such a mature adult and all :) ... Mom even made an apple pie for everyone! (Which went quite well with all the vodka and Chex Mix)

Brian came over a few hours early and helped me set everything up. We had a few pre-party drinks and read the book "Cloudy w/ a Chance of Meatballs" together before the party-people arrived. At about 10 pm, the thirsty troops started rolling in. They brought lots of booze, friends & some homemade brownies- (Thanks Mirella & Antonio!)...

My personal favorite party-moment was when my brother's friends jumped on his bed so that I could take a "wish-you-were-here" picture text-message for his enjoyment, (see picture above). He wasn't exactly thrilled to receive that text...(haha!)

I woke-up with Brian this morning, (who graciously stayed to help me clean-up), and made him chocolate-chip pancakes for breakfast. We noshed together on the backyard screened-in porch. It was the perfect morning to top off a crazy-fun night :)

Farewell, Patrick Swayze

After having a slight meltdown last night after my graphics design class, (Note to Professor: I've never worked with a MAC!)... I shaved my legs, channeled my inner-diva and headed over to my friend's house dressed as Baby for a "Farewell, Patrick Swayze" Party!

I wore my $5 mom-shorts from Wal-Mart with my roommate's skinny belt. Two stylish gay guys told me I could actually wear that on a normal day and look hot... so from now on: I'm gonna channel 1963 for my fashion influences :)

Anyway, the party was a hit! Here's a cell-phone picture of me, dressed as Baby, with my new Swayze-channeling friend, John... (who just happens to be my partner in Marketing class... it's crazy who one will run into around DC)...

Kings of Leon... "SEX ON FIRE!"

On Tuesday night, Brian and I drove up to Columbia, MD with some of his friends to see Kings of Leon play at Merriwether Post Pavilion. Here's the stellar review I wrote for my school paper...

Nashville-based rock-band Kings of Leon hit the stage at Merriwether Post Pavilion Sept. 8th and pleased fans with their impressive set, contagious energy and sexy vocals.

The Kings rocked-out to songs from their 2008 album, Only by the Night, such as “Notion,” “Closer,” “Manhattan” and “Crawl.” The band has a very distinct and recurring sound, yet each song had its own unique vibe to offer the patrons of the sold-out show. And because of the lead-signer’s seductive voice, each of those vibes was pleasantly captivating.

The songs “Use Somebody” and “Sex on Fire,” popular hits on radio stations across the country, were highlights of the show for many concert-goers. The entire stadium was dancing along and shouting-out the lyrics… “Your sex is on fire, Consumed with what’s to transpire!”

"There's always been an element of sex in our music, so I thought I'd just wrap it all up in one song and be done with the sex for the rest of the record," joked Caleb in the band’s website biography. “I don't really remember writing it. I just woke up with an empty bottle of wine and my songbook open and these words written down.”

Caleb, Jared, Matthew and Nathan Followill, (all brothers except for Matthew, a first-cousin), are Kings of Leon’s leading men. Caleb, on leading-vocals and rhythm-guitar, was clearly the camera’s favorite band-member. He entertained the crowd between songs with various words of wisdom and often accompanied these life-lessons with a large shot of liquor and a swig of red Gatorade.

“It took us a really long time to get to this point. We had three records out before people even started listening to us,” Caleb said. “This is the best show we’ve ever played. You guys are amazing. YEAH!”

“He’s a rock-star, so I guess he can say whatever he wants, right?” said Paul Turkevich of Arlington, VA. “I don’t know, judging by the singer’s current state-of-mind, it makes me wonder if they even know what city they’re in,” he joked.

Caleb on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jared on bass and Matthew on lead guitar all had similar hipster appearances with their tight jeans, flannel shirts and wispy hair. Nathan on drums, however, looked like he had taken a wrong turn on his way to a heavy-metal concert. His long black hair and sleeveless shirt looked slightly out of place next to his band-mates’ alternative styles. Nevertheless, he delivered a great show and thoroughly impressed the crowd.

One of the best parts of the show was the encore when the band blasted three memorable songs including “Knocked Up” and “Use Somebody.” By this point, all the band-members were drenched in sweat and you could see it fly through the air as they shook their luscious locks of hair. Caleb’s large cross necklace swung from side-to-side as the wetness flew from his body.

“I honestly thought the lead guitarist had a fan aimed at his head the entire time. His wings were out-of-control,” said Nick Scialli of Arlington, VA. “It was a great show, their set was on fire!”

And in case anyone cares… The opening band, The Features, also put-on a good show. The band consists of four scruffy Nashville boys that sound like everyone and no one you’ve ever heard. I couldn’t put my finger on it, who do they sound like!? Judge for yourself, visit their MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/thefeatures

My Lovely Italian Wife

I think it's about time that I dedicated a post to my wife...

NO, I'm not married, nor am I bisexual. But when it comes to this charming lady, magic hits the fan!

Kelsey Hooligan was my roommate for 5 weeks over in Italy this summer. A native Chicago girl, Kelsey loves gin & tonics and animal-printed anything. She enjoys snuggling, drunk-dialing & eating beefy hunks of meatloaf. She has unsuccessfully embarked upon several "vows of abstinence" because of her never-ending search for "big dumb men."

Despite her dynamite personality and uncontrollably good looks, I am drawn to Ms. Hooligan by one unchanging & unforgettable fact: she saved my life...

When I was cringed into a ball on my dirty Italian bunk, moaning in pain because of food poisoning from grocery-store sushi, Kelsey went out and bought me medicine, took me to the doctor's office, stayed by my side at the hospital and even made me home-made canned soup for lunch :) ... It is because of her generosity that I am alive and sane today!

So ODE to you, dear Kelsey... May we forever be connected by our marvelous senses of humor and our mutual love for the Disney Channel... "Riempirlo!"

Doppelganger...

Earlier today I was occupying myself on facebook when an instant message popped-up on the screen...

It was from a New Zealand exchange student who was in one of my marketing classes last year. It read... "I met your doppelganger last night"...

NOW: As a journalist, I like to think that I have a pretty descent vocabulary. But I honestly had NO idea what the world "doppelganger" meant! Hoping the dude wasn't trying to pull something awkward or sexual, (he seemed normal!?), I quickly typed the word into Google. This is what I found on Wikipedia...

Doppelganger: In the vernacular, the word "doppelgänger" has come to refer (as in German) to any double or look-alike of a person.

Once I realized that this dude had met my look-alike, (not my she-male ex-cousin half-removed), I felt much better! Here's a picture of my doppelganger that Evan from New Zealand sent me...

SO... what do you all think? Is she my long-lost twin!?

500 Days of Summer

There are SO many hysterically blogable things that have happened to me this week. Unfortunately, about 99% of them are completely inappropriate, deeply secretive or slightly disturbing to some readers. ERGO: Brace yourselves for a killer movie review...

I finally saw "500 Days of Summer" this weekend. It was charming, witty, and kept my attention with a mix of Indy creativity and dirty humor. Here's an example of the films irresistible appeal...

The protagonist, Tom Hansen, (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), writes greeting-cards for a living. After breaking up with his girlfriend, Summer, (played by Zooey Deschanel), he writes a Valentine's card that reads... "Roses are Red, Violets are blue, F*** you Wh***!"... (Maybe you had to be there, but I almost peed my pants! It was a true knee-slapper...)

Another memorable scene was when Tom & Summer went shopping at IKEA for new furniture. They ran through the store pretending to be a 1950s couple living in all the different kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, etc. They started getting frisky on a display bed when Tom gazed into Summer's eyes and said... "Darling, I need to tell you something: There's a Chinese family standing in our bathroom"... (camera zooms-in on a confused family staring at the disheveled couple...)

Basically: I highly recommend the movie. Guys will like it, girls will LOVE it and I guarantee the Academy will give it something sculpted & shiny. I also just bought the entire soundtrack on iTunes... (the best song is "You Make My Dreams" by Hall & Oates... go & download it, STAT!)

Back to School, Back to School... To write a story that'll make me cool!

Well, folks... classes have started and I'm taking a manageable senior-year course-load of 12 credits, (4 classes), including... 1) Basic Photography, 2) Computer Literacy for Design, 3) Feature Article Writing, & 4) Advertising/Brand Promotion...

For my feature article writing class, (taught by a professor who has been on OPRAH twice!), I have to write a story that spins off of something being covered in the news. Naturally, the first place I turned was my entertainment bible, People Magazine :)

My first idea is to write a story on WHY Jon & Kate's divorce has flooded news wires. Putting aside the obvious reasons, (a lovable reality show, 8 crazy little-ones & Jon's ultimate mid-life crisis), why are we STILL reading about these people? What would we be reading about if they have never divorced? Do Americans even know what other celebrity couples called it quits this summer?... The headline could be: "Jon & Kate: America's Ultimate Love-Hate"...

Loyal readers... Do any of you have clever ideas on news-stories that I could write a feature spin-off on? Maybe a topic that DOESN'T involve celebrity-gossip and entertainment buzz? Any ideas you can contribute would be greatly appreciated :)
